St. John's

One of the oldest cities in North America, St. John's is a place like no other. Located in a picturesque harbour that has been carved from granite, and surrounded by hills running down to the ocean, the place that is affectionately known as "The Rock", combines old and new, city and nature. The quaint side streets are lined with buildings that are a kaleidoscope of colour, and the people are about as warm and welcoming as they come. Harbour Drive, which skirts the northern bank of St. John's Harbour, provides a wonderful view of the ships from all over the world that tie up to the wharf and of the often-feverish activity that accompanies them. The wharf is as lengthy as Harbour Drive and it is possible to walk to the edge for close-up views of the vessels. Check out the Fort Amherst Museum, which features the first lighthouse in the province, or the Johnson Geo Centre and learn about the area's four billion year old geological past. Better yet, tuck into one of the many local pubs and take in some traditional music.
